Mount Elbrus, the Highest Mountain in Europe
  • Climbing Mount Elbrus in Russia is supposed to be a piece of cake. Well, from the South route anyway. Its northern border route about this mountain is definitely an entirely different challenge. A suitable mountaineering experience unlike say Kilmanjaro. Climbing Elbrus involves a large amount of preparation coming from a physical, mental and logistical perspective.

    Apparently visiting Russia could take a while. So you will intend to make another intend to improvise. the top way of transportation being what modern man calls the aeroplane. Upon arrival in the awesome capital of scotland- Moscow the enjoyment and games begin. The first challenge is obtaining a taxi. When you have done that, the work of explaining your destination and negotiating an amount is next on your list. No easy task when nobody speaks English. The drive through to central Moscow takes about 1.5 hours. The airport is around 50km away from central Moscow and the visitors a nightmare. Upon arrival inside the hotel, its an instant vodka, shower and... time to hit the streets of Moscow. And don't try and hit them also hard as you may go the second best. There are some pretty cool restaurants where you stand up against another challenge. You will end up required to negotiate your way around a menu in Russian and waiter who, you got it right, only speaks Russian. What we suggest you do is close your eyes, move your finger along the menu and where ever your finger stops... order that. Oh, also remember the vodka. After dinner, a bit ramble up to the Red Square to find out the Kremlin is unquestionably so as. Please don't attempt to spray-paint your business about the Kremlin walls. Somehow the Russian secret service doesn't approve of this sporting activity.


    An early day I'm afraid. Well, That's not me really afraid as days aren't anything to get afraid of. The Russian Mafia is a thing to be afraid about, but I'll leave that story for the next time. The flight to Mineralyne Vody leaves at 12H00 going to 14H00. Upon arrival, we bunch the tools on top of the bus and take the An hour drive through with an awesome town called Kislovodsk where we look at our hotel to the evening. Once checked in, we hit the city for lunch as well as a vodka or 10. If you aren't during intercourse by 12H00, please return to the resort. Breakfast is served. This is not tennis. Sorry to disappoint you for this one. Base camp in cases like this identifies our base for the Elbrus climb. The drive into base camp is both spectacular and nerve racking. The roads are already carved to the mountains leaving vertical drops as high as 200m. The tracks only permit one vehicle at any given time.
